NEHAJ FORTRESS

The renaissance Nehaj Fortress that was built on a hill overlooking the town in 1558, and stories and legends about uskoks from Senj, probably enchanted Kurt Held so much that he used these details in the story about Zora and her friends who lived here, in the Nehaj Fortress. The Senj captain Ivan Lenković had churches, monasteries and other buildings outside the town walls pulled down and used this material to build the Nehaj Fortress. Nehaj is today a part of the Senj Town Museum, which hosts a permanent exhibition entitled The Uskoks from Senj, the Senj Maritime Captaincy , Churches of Senj Throughout History and The Town’s and Noblemen’s Coats of Arms of Senj.

The Nehaj Fortress is the highlight of our stroll through the town in the company of red-haired Zora.
