CILNICA SQUARE – MAIN SQUARE
Of the three squares in which the series was shot, the most remarkable in size and shape is the renaissance-baroque Cilnica Square. In its centre there is a classicist fountain, and we recall the scene in which Zora and her friends hid there from gendarmes. Cilnica Square hosted a celebration in the series on the occasion of an abundant fish catch.
On the square there is the town castle from the Frankopan period, a dukes’ residence that was later the seat of the Senj Captaincy.
By the end of the 19th century, it was redesigned into a hall of residence for the students of the Senj gymnasium – the famous Ožegovićianum Institute. It was there that the notorious captain Rabata, oppressor of many uskoks, was executed in 1601. According to legend, the castle and the Nehaj fortress are connected by an underground passage.
Today, the square is the central place of many events, such as the International Summer Carnival, Days of the Uskoks and the Samba Festival, which are held in the summer months.
